"Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort [encourage] one another daily, while it is called 'Today,' lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin."
(Hebrews 3:12-13)
I have noticed that those whose love language is words of affirmation often are the ones giving words of affirmation, because they know how much it means to them. But if that is not your primary love language, you can still use your words to build up and encourage and not tear down or damage.
In addition to simply speaking to another person and writing notes of encouragement to them, another way we can exhort is, thirdly, by giving second-hand compliments. This is when you tell someone the good word you heard another person say about him or her. For example: "Hey, Seth, I wanted to tell you that I heard Bob telling some guys the other day how much he respected you and your integrity." That is a second-hand compliment, and when done tactfully and with a pure heart, it can really bolster someone.
Fourth, another very simple way to build up another is simply saying to them these wonderful words: "thank you," or "I appreciate you," or "I am proud of you." There is much more gossip and hurtful speech than there are kind and encouraging words. Some have the unspiritual gift of discouragement. Seldom is heard an encouraging word. But it does not have to be that way!
Church should be a place of grace where we edify one another and motivate each other to do great things for God. Additionally, every day we should speak a word of blessing to those in our homes. Our family members should hear positive compliments and words of affirmation constantly.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Will you give life to someone today? Take the time to bless another person by speaking words of life, compliment, and affirmation. Especially encourage someone dear to you like your spouse, children, mom, dad, sibling, or close friend. Make a habit of speaking life to others.
I will close these devotions on the power of words by speaking a word of blessing over your life. You can receive eternal life, be saved by Jesus, and that can happen today! Simply ask Him to forgive you and come into your life and be the Lord and Savior of your life. God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life. Trust Him today!
