When No One is Looking

"And whatever you do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord and not to men."

(Colossians 3:23)

I believe it was D.L. Moody who said, "Character is who you are in the dark." Doing the right thing and giving our best, whether or not people are watching us, is a key aspect of integrity. Recently, our family went to Disney World, and God blessed us with a fun time. What a blessing it was to be together as a family and have grandbaby Claire with us.

I took the picture below, and when you first look at it, you might ask, "Why this picture?" After all, with all the amazing photos I could have taken, why in the world would I take this one? Look carefully.
This is a picture of the conclusion of the Disney characters' parade that meandered through the park at Magic Kingdom. What impressed me more than the choreography and costumes was the way the participants finished the parade. While marching through the last gate, they continued in character and performed as if thousands were watching, when in reality, they could barely be seen.

Giving our best and performing with excellence are very praiseworthy. When we do so, we live a fulfilled life, and moreover, we present a positive witness for Christ to those around us. When the Apostle Paul instructs us to do whatever we do "heartily," the word he uses in Greek is psyche, from which we get the English word "psyche" and the root of the word "psychology". Whatever we attempt, we should give it our very best. We should put our heart and soul into the task.

Perhaps you are thinking that if you give everything you do 100%, you will be exhausted all the time! No: this is where rest comes in. There is a season for everything: a time for work, rest, and play. I want to go to heaven having given my best at whatever I set my hands and mind to accomplish. There is a real joy and sense of fulfillment when we live our lives all-out for the glory of God and the betterment of others.

May God bless you as you seek to give a 100% today in whatever He places before you to accomplish. People may be watching you and noticing your hard work, or you may be out of sight from everyone. You may think that it doesn't matter, but it does. By God's empowering grace, give your best today.
