"Thus says the LORD who made it, the LORD who formed it to establish it (the LORD is His name): 'Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.'"
(Jeremiah 33:2-3)
While Ashley and I were in Arizona on Tuesday evening this past week, we were able to join the prayer meeting at Great Hills Baptist Church online. I was amazed at the number of people from different parts of the country who were tuning in and submitting prayer requests. Nearly 400 people joined us for part or all of the prayer service. There is really something powerful when the people of God come together to simply pray. We can do many things after we pray, but nothing of eternal significance until we pray.
Robby Gallaty, pastor of Longhollow Baptist church in Tennessee, recently asked, "Anyone think we need to bring the weekly prayer meeting back to churches?" Gallaty is one of several pastors who is sensing a strong desire and need for the church of God to pray. I am grateful to God for the resurgence and priority of prayer in our church here in Austin at GHBC. Before God does a mighty work, He leads His people to intensify their praying.
How is your prayer life? The Bible is replete with examples and admonitions to us to pray to God. Why do you think most Christians and churches place so little value and time on prayer? I think it is because we believe we do not really need God. We feel we can get along just fine in our own strength and power without the intervening power of God. Some reading this might object fiercely, but let me ask you and your church: are you praying as God would have you pray?
As for me, I realize how destitute and absolutely powerless I am without the Lord in my life. As Jesus taught us in John 15:5, we can do nothing apart from Him. I love this powerful quote on prayer by Samuel Chadwick: "The one concern of the devil is to keep Christians from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work, and prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we pray."
If you would like to participate with us in our prayer meeting, feel free to join us in person or online at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday nights at ghbc.org or on Facebook Live.
How can I or our team at DFEA pray for you? Send us your prayer requests at dforshee@dfea.com.
