"Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you."
(1 Peter 5:7)
Matthew West's new song "Truth Be Told" carries a catchy tune and packs a powerful punch. In the song, West details how easy it is to say you're fine and all is well, even when the truth is just the opposite.
Here are some of the lyrics:
Lie number one: you're supposed to have it all together
And when they ask how you're doing
Just smile and tell them, "Never better"
Lie number two: everybody's life is perfect except yours
So keep your messes and your wounds
And your secrets safe with you behind closed doors
Truth be told, the truth is rarely told, now
I say, "I'm fine, yeah I'm fine, oh I'm fine, hey I'm fine,"
But I'm not
I'm broken
And when it's out of control I say, "It's under control,"
But it's not
And you know it
I don't know why it's so hard to admit it
When being honest is the only way to fix it
There's no failure, no fall
There's no sin you don't already know
So let the truth be told
I think we are all guilty of not speaking the truth when someone asks how we are doing. We would rather tell a little lie than go into detail as to how we are really feeling.
During our Christ Together Greater Austin board meeting last week, we had our usual check-in with each pastor. When I was asked how I was doing, I actually sang a little of Truth Be Told. It was kind of strange for me to sing when one of the pastors on the Zoom call was Randy Phillips who created the Christian band, Phillips, Craig, and Dean. But he chuckled along with the other men. I explained that after months of not being able to meet due to COVID-19, it was really hard to shut our church once again, this time due to the flooding caused by the burst pipes in our church. We had around 100,000 gallons of water flood our campus. (Now, that is a lot of H2O!)
But God has been so very faithful to us. Yes, it is hard not being with our church family in person on Sundays, but we have a very talented media team here at Great Hills Baptist Church in Austin, TX, and they broadcast the worship services on multiple platforms. Many people worship with us across the USA. But to borrow a phrase from West, truth be told, I am ready to preach in our worship center again with living, breathing human beings!
So, how are you doing? Fine? Really? It is okay to admit to the Lord and to others that you are not fine and could use some prayer and encouragement. As for the latter, take a couple of minutes to listen to West's song, "Truth Be Told." I think you will be both blessed and challenged.
