Daily Proverbs & Verses

This week's devotions are written by my son, Bryant Forshee, Lead Student Pastor for Cross Church, Springdale, AR campus.

"The grass withers and the flowers fade,
but the word of our God stands forever."

(Isaiah 40:8, NLT)

How much of God's word is in your life? Do you read it as soon as you wake up? Do you read it throughout the day? Do you meditate on it throughout the day? Do you have a daily quiet time where you spend time studying the scriptures?

I am very thankful to have a daily time in the word modeled for me by my parents. I can recall early memories of seeing both my parents reading the word of God and prioritizing the word of God. I am so thankful and blessed that Kyndall also reminds me of the necessity and importance of the word of God. There will be days that I will see her studying the word and days where she will bring up questions she has about what she has read in it. I am thankful that I have mentors and pastors who constantly encourage taking in the word of God.

Reading and studying the word of God is not a new thing, nor is it probably an "aha" moment for you, where this really changes your perspective. The point of today's devotional is just to reemphasize the importance of God's word and maybe give you a few new tips and tricks to add to your daily intake of the Bible.

1. A Chapter of Proverbs Each Day
This is something that I know my dad has done and spoken about for a long time. This is also something that I have started to do, and it has really blessed my quiet times and my relationship with the Lord. What you do is take whatever day of the month it is, and read the chapter of Proverbs with the same number as the date. For example: today is August 15th, so you would read Proverbs 15. What I like about a daily time with wisdom literature is that it will give you practical nuggets of wisdom to add to your life and fill up your wisdom tank for the day and for the future. So today, go read Proverbs 15.

2. Verse of the Day
This tip requires the YouVersion Bible app. This is not the only app that gives a verse of the day, but this is the app that I use and love, so I am going to boost that one. :) Every morning, I try to make one of the first things I do, after I turn off the pesky alarm, to open the Bible app and read the verse of the day. There are a couple reasons that I like this; one is selfish, the other is beneficial. The beneficial reason: it starts my day immediately with my mind on scripture. After I wake up from the alarm, feeling groggy and grumpy (I can't be the only one who feels this way first thing in the morning), it is refreshing and soul-satisfying to get my mind on the word of God. The selfish reason I like this is that the Bible app will give you a "streak" of how many days you have used the Bible app, and it is fun to see the number go up as you consecutively read the verse of the day.

3. Write Down Favorite Proverbs & the Verse of the Day
This is something that I have recently added. I normally journal during my quiet time, and before I write down my daily reading verses and thoughts, I will jot down the verses that stick out to me as I read the Proverb of the day, and then I write down the verse of the day. There is something for me about writing these verses down that helps my brain retain them a little better than when I don't write them down. So today, write down some verses that stick out to you!

Simply put: Proverbs. Verse of the day. Write them down. These will be helpful for you, because Isaiah 40:8 is true, and it says, "The word of our God stands forever." So let's get the word of our God into our lives as much as we can!

Fallen Saints

Pastor Danny shares a sobering and difficult but very important message on maintaining purity and living righteously, especially in the area of sexuality, and especially for pastors and other Christian leaders. He discusses the grave harms that come to the Church when their leaders fail in this area, what genuine repentance looks like, possible paths to restoration and reconciliation in some cases, and other cases when a fallen saint cannot be restored to ministry.
