Scripture Memory in Evangelism

This week's devotions are written by my friend Jessica Hermann, former director of our college ministry at Great Hills Baptist Church.
- Pastor Danny
On Monday, I told you that my husband and I had memorized Philippians 2:5-11, and recited it at an event last weekend. This is a passage that I had memorized previously and recited alone a few years ago at our church when we were attending an international English speaking church. I tried to be diligent to remember the passage even after the recitation and keep it fresh in my mind. A few months ago, a young man came to visit our church. He is Muslim, and after the service, someone introduced me to him, because it was clear that his English was far better than his German. So we got to have a great conversation in English which quickly turned into a Gospel conversation. He had many questions about Jesus, but I wasn't sure how open he was. The conversation turned to address the topic of the humility of Christ, something that Philippians 2:5-11 very clearly speaks about. So I just started reciting the passage to him. He was so shocked and impressed that I knew the Bible well enough to just quote it to him directly. He said, "Oh, wow, you really know your Holy Book." This really opened up the door for deeper conversation where I got to share the whole Gospel with him. He said he would continue to consider the things I had shared, as he truly didn't know that these things I shared were what Christianity was actually all about.

Today's main point about scripture memory and recitation is: Memorizing Scripture enables you to effectively share God's Word with other people.

Yes, Scripture memory is not just for personal benefit; it blesses others! Memorized Scripture just may be the best evangelism tool to have in your toolbelt. When the opportunity presents itself for you to witness to another person, there are no more powerful words than the words of the Scriptures themselves.

Consider these powerful truths about God's Word:

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 16-17)

"Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him." (Proverbs 30:5)

"It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life." (John 6:63)

"So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it." (Isaiah 55:11)

Who knows when you will have your next opportunity to share God's Word with someone? Let's fill ourselves with God's Word so that when the opportunity arises, we can confidently speak the words of God to others.
