God & Government, Pt. 2

God & Government, Pt. 2

As followers of Jesus, we simply cannot be politically ignorant. We should be in the know, do our research, and vote based on biblical values.

God & Government, Pt. 2

"Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence."

(1 Timothy 2:1-2)

On Friday of last week, I had the privilege of meeting and praying for our new Chief of Police in Austin, TX, Lisa Davis. Here is a picture of many pastors in Austin who prayed over our new police chief. She has an incredibly important and hard job. She needs our prayers and support, like all those in leadership positions in our country. What a joy to offer our support and prayers.
An overview of the political landscape in the USA reveals a nation in much turmoil and deeply divided along partisan lines. "With weeks left until Election Day, OpenSecrets predicts that 2024's federal election cycle is on track to be the costliest ever, with a total cost of at least $15.9 billion in spending." (Source.) We have lost much of our civility and ability to disagree respectfully and politely. I think the best thing we could do is turn off Fox News and CNN and pray. What if you prayed as much as you watched Fox News? Prayer is hard work, and that is why most do not do it. It is much easier to turn on the TV and let others think and speak for us. But God has called His people to a higher and holier level of living!

The elephant in the room is: as a Christian, how could you vote for Donald Trump or Kamala Harris? Good question, but there is more than an elephant in the room; there are also donkeys. But far more important than elephants and donkeys is the Lamb of God! God does not sit on an elephant or donkey; He sits above the world He created, and in His great love for us, He sent His Son to be the Lamb of God, slain for our salvation.

As followers of Jesus, we simply cannot be politically ignorant. We should be in the know, do our research, understand who the candidates are, and what they would do if elected president. As followers of Jesus, we should vote our biblical values. If there is one message that I would like for you to grasp, it is this: vote biblical values. The voting public has an advantage in this 2024 presidential election: Trump has served as president, and we know his strengths and weaknesses. Similarly, Harris has served as VP of our country the last four years, and we know her strengths and weaknesses too.

A good question to answer every four years is this one: Are you better off today than you were four years ago? The majority in our country answer from a purely economic point of view and say they are worse off now due to inflation, which has risen from 1.23% to a peak of 9.59% in 2022, by the government's numbers. Fortunately, it went down as low as 2.5% in August of 2024, but since inflation is the rate of devaluation of the dollar, prices have not stopped going up. Since wages tend to be adjusted more slowly than prices of goods, average wages have not risen commensurately, and this is why so many people are feeling a financial crunch.

Pray and vote. It is our civic duty and responsibility. If we do not vote, then many feel we lose our right to speak out for or against the candidates. Go vote, please! ...and don't forget: vote biblical values!
