Humble Expectation

Humble Expectation

When we come to the reading of the Word of God, we must adopt the attitude of the Psalmist: humble expectation.

Humble Expectation

This week's devotions are written by my son, Bryant Forshee, Lead Student Pastor for Cross Church, Springdale, AR campus, and former Junior High Pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, TX.

"Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions."

(Psalm 119:18, NLT)

Today is a fun and special day in my world because today is the day we take our students off to Student Camp. This is such a special week for us to get away from the busyness of the world and spend intentional and focused time with Jesus. There are a lot of things that will happen each day at this camp: breakfast, morning devos, morning shows, lunch, rec, free time, dinner, worship services, small group time, late nights, and (eventually) sleep. That is a long and busy day, but we do all of those fun and crazy things to get to the crux of every day: the worship service. The worship service is all constructed around a specific moment: the preaching and teaching of the word of God.

Yes, we plan a whole week, budget out a whole week, and build up every day with the humble expectation for God to show up through the teaching of His Word. This time of teaching and preaching is for every person in the room. From the student pastors to the leaders to the students, the word of God is preached, and our prayer is that of the Psalmist: "open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions." Today, I want you to think about this question: What role does the Word of God play in my life? Or ask yourself this: How important is God's Word in my life?

If we are going to pull the students of Cross Church out of their normal everyday lives and take them to a different place to specifically and clearly hear the Word of God, it must be a big deal. God's Word must play a big and important role in the life of any believer. Why should we be obedient to the Word, and why should it play an important role in our lives? Well, it is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. It is living and active. It is perfect, trustworthy, and more desirable than gold. It is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. It remains forever. These truths are from just a few of the Scriptures that talk about what God's Word is and does.

When we come to the reading of the Word of God, we must adopt the attitude of the Psalmist: humble expectation. The Psalmist is asking God to open his eyes, open his understanding, so that he can see the WONDERFUL truths from God's word. Today, have a high view of the Word of God, and pray the humble, expectant prayer when you open the Word: that God would open your eyes so you can see the wonderful truths in God's instructions.
