"Open your mouth for the speechless,
In the cause of all who are appointed to die.
Open your mouth, judge righteously,
And plead the cause of the poor and needy."
(Proverbs 31:8-9)
In his thought-provoking and challenging book, Letter to the American Church, Eric Metaxas challenges followers of Jesus in America to stop being silent and start speaking out for biblical morality. He argues rather convincingly that the Church in America today is where the Church in Germany was in the 1930s. German Christians, by and large, did not stand up to Hitler and his evil atrocities. Some pastors, however, like Dietrich Bonhoeffer, stood boldly and spoke out. It cost Bonhoeffer his life, but he would rather die than see Hitler continue his genocide of innocent people.
We are dealing with our own genocide in our country. Millions of unborn children are murdered every year in their mother's wombs. The basic family unit ordained by God is under assault and has been for decades. There is now much confusion over simple biological realities like what constitutes a male and a female. Who will speak out and stand up for life and biblical ethics? Does your pastor speak on these issues? Do you?
A pastor of a popular megachurch in Oklahoma has chosen to speak up about some of these issues. Instead of defending the basic teaching of Scripture on gender, he has decided to rebuke God for not being clear enough in the Bible on these issues. I was saddened to hear this news. But I was not surprised. Whenever you neglect the consistent teaching of the Word of God as a pastor, you will open yourself and your people up to many doctrinal errors. Many churches in our country have abandoned the teaching of the Scriptures for a popular easy-believism that sacrifices truth in the name of tolerance. We are reaping the high cost of low biblical preaching. I do not know how God could make it any clearer than this: "So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them" (Genesis 1:27).
In tomorrow's devotion, I will share with you some practical ways Christians can respond to the challenges we are facing.
