Word for the Day: Obedience

Word for the Day: Obedience

We need the same radical obedience to Jesus Christ
in our day that the Apostles had in the first century.

Word for the Day: Obedience

"But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: 'We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him."

(Acts 5:29-32)

I love this passage of Scripture in Acts. In fact, I love the whole Book of Acts. For quite a while now, I have been preaching through the Book of Acts verse by verse at Great Hills Baptist Church. We need the same radical obedience to Jesus Christ in our day that the Apostles had in the first century. Think on this powerful declaration by Peter and the apostles: "We ought to obey God rather than men." To obey God is our highest duty. To obey God will no doubt bring us into conflict with the world and with those who oppose God and His Word.

These courageous men boldly and obediently proclaimed the crucified and resurrected Christ, and it cost them dearly. All the apostles, except John, died horrible deaths as martyrs for Christ. They stood strong for Christ and declared the Gospel, telling those who harassed them that they were witnesses for Jesus. Notice the strong Trinitarian doctrine of the Early Church. In this one text, they mention God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Our God is the awesome God of all, and He is worthy of our highest allegiance and obedience!

I believe it was Mother Teresa who said, "God has not called us to be successful; He has called us to be faithful." The best way to be faithful to God is simply to do what He tells you to do. Obey God. I'm not sure about you, but I do not always obey God as I should, and that grieves me. I sin in my disobedience. God convicts me, and when I repent, He restores me and tells me to get going, because He has things for me to do.

How about you? Are walking with God at a guilty distance in disobedience? Let me admonish you to repent and get back on the track, following hard after Jesus and doing what He has told you to do. Love God and your neighbor. Tell everyone you meet about Jesus Christ. Love your spouse. Love your kids. Love your church. Do good deeds. Well, I could go on and on, but you get the picture!

Come on, child of God! Let us get back to the basics of living for Jesus and obeying Him!
