"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."
(Proverbs 9:10)
The sacred Book of Proverbs has much to say about wisdom. Proverbs 4:7 states,
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding."
The entire chapter of Proverbs 8 is dedicated to the wisdom of God and how, through His wisdom, He created everything. Our focal text today sums up the matter very succinctly: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom."
All of us, especially those in positions of leadership, desperately need the wisdom of God. We are finite and very limited in our abilities and wisdom. But God is infinite and omniscient. He can do anything, and He knows everything! It certainly behooves us to cry out to God to impart to us the wisdom we need to live our lives in a way that honors Him. We need the wisdom of God in making the daily decisions that have to be made. We need God's wisdom when making decisions that are very weighty and will determine the course of our lives.
The best and wisest decision of all is to fear God. To fear God, you have to know Him. To be in relationship with God is man's highest privilege. To know Him and serve Him in awe and respect is the life God intends for His children. A healthy dose of the fear of God will also keep us out of trouble. I know God will chastise me as His child, and that motivates me to do right! I like the way O.S. Hawkins puts it: "I do not fear so much God putting His hand on me as I do Him taking His hand off of me."
Do you need the wisdom of God? I know I do. Let us do what Scripture tells us and ask Him for it. James 1:5-6 states,
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally
and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith,
with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea
driven and tossed by the wind."
God invites us to ask Him for wisdom, and He promises to give us the very wisdom we request. He also tells us to ask in faith and not to doubt. The wave on the sea is at the mercy of the wind; it possesses no stability of its own. Likewise, when we do not trust God, we too are unstable and easily influenced. But when we ask God for wisdom and believe, then we will be solid, sturdy, and blessed!
"Dear God, we love, trust, fear, and stand in awe of You. You are the one, true, and living God. We ask for wisdom for daily decisions. You possess all wisdom, and we as Your children ask in faith that you grant us the wisdom we need to live our lives for You here on earth. Thank You for hearing our prayer and granting this request, in Jesus' name we pray. Amen."
