"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."
(John 1:14)
The Word became flesh, but humanity largely rejected Him then, just like today. Jesus dwelt, and this speaks to me of the powerful staying presence of God. He saw His mission through til the very end; He accomplished all the Father asked Him to do. Part of laying His glory by, as Wesley wrote, is the applause and recognition of Heaven. He willfully took upon Himself the normal limitations of mankind while still being divine. He never ceased to be God Almighty, despite laying aside some of His privileges of deity. He is still the only begotten eternal Son of the Father.
Because Jesus came the first time and established His Kingdom, His reign and rule, He can come any time to assist us when we need Him. He lived and He lives; He changed the world, and He continues to change our world when we turn to Him in faith. He invites us to come to Him: "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." ( Hebrews 4:16)
One of my favorite Christian songs currently is Mercy Me's "Then Christ Came". It reminds me that because Jesus came and lived among us, paid the price for our eternal salvation, arose from the dead, and ascended to the Father, He is able to come to us today in any extremity we face. Take a moment and listen to Bart Millard sing these powerful lyrics:
I was searching for a reason
To believe that I could ever really matter
Ever matter
I was hoping, I was reaching
So desperate for my soul to find its Savior
I need a savior
Then Christ came
Changing everything
He took my sin and shame away
Now every song
I sing will be for Him
Ever since the moment He walked in
Then Christ came, whoa
You are the One I prayed for
You are the One I was made for
Hallelujah
Jesus, You gave me purpose
Jesus, You told me I'm worth it
Hallelujah
