"Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way."
(Luke 19:1-4)
Jesus is our example in all things. He shows us how to fulfill this last S in BLESS: to share Him with others who do not know Him. He accomplished all the five aspects of the BLESS model: He prayed for people, listened to them and asked questions, ate with and hung out with them, served people, and most definitely shared the Good News with them. The early church also did these things, just like all biblical churches do today.
Zacchaeus was very open to hearing about Jesus. He heard Jesus was coming, so he climbed up in a sycamore tree so he could see him. He was short and did not want to miss seeing Jesus. Why all this interest in Jesus? No doubt he had heard the many stories circulating about Christ--His teaching and His miracles--and he just had to see Him. In the words of Ellie Holcomb's new song, he did not want to miss a thing!
Your voice is a burning bush
Your voice is a million things
Your voice is the sound of thundering hooves
Your voice is hummingbird's wings
And I don't want to miss it
I don't want to miss a thing
So I climbed up in a sycamore tree
'Cause I don't want to miss a thing
And I don't want to miss it
I don't want to miss a thing
I don't want to miss the melody
That You've been singing over me (ooh, hey, ooh, hey)
Yeah, You've been singing all around me.
