Remembering 9-11

"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

(Romans 12:21)

On Saturday, our nation remembered that fateful day 20 years ago when we suffered horribly at the hands of terrorists. Do you remember where you were on that day? I was serving as the pastor of Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, VA. It was a Tuesday morning, and I was studying when our Executive Pastor interrupted me and said, "You need to see this." Our church staff watched in horror as two planes crashed into the World Trade Towers in New York City. Those images are forever embedded in my mind.

Evil certainly struck a lethal blow on that day. Not only were people murdered in NYC, but we also lost people in Washington DC when the Pentagon was struck by another airplane. Also, all aboard United Airlines Flight 93 perished in a fiery crash. It is just heartbreaking to think about. But think about it we must.
We must remember those whose lives were taken, and we must honor those brave men and women who died working to save others that day. So many brave firemen ran into the burning towers knowing that they would most likely lose their lives in the process.

In September of 2018, Ashley and I visited the 9-11 Memorial and Museum. It is one of the most stunning places I have ever been, and I wish every American had the opportunity to visit. Here are a couple of photos I took on that day:
I know our nation is divided now more than ever. There is so much hatred for those who are on the opposite side of the political aisle. But during this time of reflection and remembrance, my hope is our nation would not focus on what divides us but on what unites us. I think of Solomon's sage words in Proverbs 10:12, "Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all sins."

Heal and comfort our land Oh Lord, we pray in Jesus' name.
