Being Flexible

"There are many plans in a man's heart,
Nevertheless the Lord's counsel—that will stand."

(Proverbs 19:21)

I am writing today's devotional a few days before you will read it. Our plans are to be in Colorado on a family vacation this week. That is our plan, but we shall see if it actually comes to pass. We are praying our family is well enough to drive the 14 hours to beautiful Colorado.

My wife Ashley is an excellent planner for trips, and she is a very patient shopper as well. She could be a great travel agent. She is flexible and works hard at getting us good deals. Me, not so much. I simply do not like to shop. For example, I go clothes shopping once every year or two. But when I go, I am dangerous. I do not bargain hunt. I find the clothing, try it on, and if it seems reasonably priced, I purchase it. Case closed. Mission accomplished!

Hopefully we will make it to Colorado. But like everything else, we must hold our plans loosely, because things can change. My first reaction to a change of plans is not very optimistic. I usually pout for a minute or two, and then it dawns on me that God may have a better plan, or He is protecting me from something I cannot see. Being flexible and fluid in our walk with the Lord is a good thing. That way we do not get too upset when things happen that are out of our control.

Blessed are the flexible, for they will not be bent out of shape! Are you flexible? Do you make your plans and then stay open-minded that God may have a better plan, or that He may be protecting you from things unseen?

I hope we make it to Colorado and make many wonderful family memories, but if I am still in Texas when you read this, praise the Lord. He is good. He is in control, and He is simply smarter than we are!
