Mighty to Save

Mighty to Save

Every conversion to Jesus is a miracle. Some are not as dramatic, but that is
okay. The dramatic stories are there to show us just how mighty our God is.

Mighty to Save

"Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized."

(Acts 16:32-33)

Every conversion to Jesus Christ is a miracle. Some are not as dramatic, but that is okay. Lydia in Acts 16 was saved by God by the riverside after she heard Paul preach. The Philippian jailer was saved by God with a dagger in his hand about to take his life. There was an earthquake, and he assumed all the prisoners would escape, so he thought it best to kill himself before the Roman authorities did.

Acts 16:28 states, "But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, 'Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.'" The Philippian jailer gave his life to Christ, and as our text states, he washed the stripes of the missionaries. All his family believed in Christ and were baptized. What a wonderful story. Our God is mighty to save!

During the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, TN last month, I heard one of the most powerful testimonies I have ever heard. Chris Carrier was only 10 years old when a man named David McAllister told him that he was throwing a party for Chris' dad, and he needed his help. Chris got in the man's RV and was driven out of town. McAllister repeatedly stabbed Chris with an ice pick, then took him to the Florida Everglades, shot him in the head, and left him to die. But miraculously Chris did not die. He woke up six days later and his dad explained to him what had happened. Chris knew God had spared his life for a reason. Chris accepted Christ as his Savior and Lord. Twenty-two years later, a police officer called Chris and told him they had found McAllister in a nursing home and asked Chris if he would like to meet McAllister.

Chris met McAlister and told him that he forgave him. McAllister told Chris he was sorry for what he had done to him. Then Chris did something remarkable. He shared the gospel with the very man who tried to kill him when he was a boy. McAllister prayed with Chris and gave his life to Jesus Christ.

Our God is indeed mighty to save. I love the way Charles Wesley writes about salvation in his hymn, "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing." He writes:

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
  He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean;
  His blood availed for me.

His blood is powerful enough to wash away any and every sin if we only call upon Jesus Christ for salvation. Do you know Jesus as Savior and Lord? If not, then today, do what the Philippian jailer did, do what David McAllister did, and what billions before have done: repent and receive Jesus today!
