"God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble."
(Psalm 46:1)
I recently received a kind, handwritten letter from a 16 year-old student in our church whom we baptized last year. She wrote to me that when difficult times come, we should not view them as weights to hold but as burdens to share, so others can help carry the load. Her words blessed and encouraged me and reminded me of Proverbs 18:21, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." I pray that you too will let others share your heavy burdens.
In the midst of so much suffering, calamity, and national and personal hardship, you may have developed spiritual amnesia and forgotten how awesome God is and how, through Christ, you are not just a conqueror, but according to Romans 8:37, you are hypernikao, more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ. "Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us." Please be reminded of this little phrase in the Bible: "But God." When we contrast our current dilemmas with the power of Almighty God, we quickly gain a proper perspective and are encouraged by the fact that God is in control, and we as His children will come through every hardship.
Be blessed by these powerful lyrics from a popular song by the Christian band, Newsboys:
The cross has the final word
The cross has the final word
Sorrow may come in the darkest night
But the cross has the final word
There's nothing stronger, nothing higher
There's nothing greater than the name of Jesus
All the honor, all the power
All the glory to the name of Jesus
The cross has the final word
The cross has the final word
Evil may put up its strongest fight
But the cross has the final word.
Our focal text for today, Psalm 46:1, is such a wonderful truth and is good for us to reflect upon every day, especially in these troubled times in which we live. Sorrows abounded for the psalmist, but God was His refuge, strength, and help. His help came from none other than the LORD God, the maker of heaven and earth. The same God who delivered him will also deliver you in His divine timing. Our job is not to figure God out, but to trust that He is sovereign. He will always do what is right for His glory and for our eternal good and benefit.
So, be strong in the Lord. You are loved and prized, and Romans 8:28 is still in the Bible! Hard times do not last, but God's people do.
But God!
