President's Day

"Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due,
customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor."

(Romans 13:7)

Today is a holiday in our nation to commemorate all presidents, but especially the first, George Washington. Here is a brief explanation about this special third Monday in February given in honor of our first president:

"Presidents' Day is a public holiday in most US states. Nonetheless, many businesses are open as usual and many stores hold sales on Washington's Birthday….The likeness and name of George Washington can still be seen in many places in the United States. There is a portrait of him and three other American presidents carved into Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. His image is also used on the one-dollar bill and the quarter-dollar coin. The capital of the United States, Washington D.C., Washington State, and at least three universities are named after him."

Speaking of US presidents, I enjoy reading their biographies. These bios are usually very long, but I have enjoyed most that I have read. I am currently reading the biography of the President Ulysses S. Grant. It is written by Ron Chernow, the same author of the excellent, Hamilton. (Alexander Hamilton was the most famous of the Founding Fathers who was never elected president.) Chernow's Grant is a large and heavy book with slightly over 1,000 pages! So far, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about the life and times of Grant. One of the fascinating factoids about his life is that the best man in his wedding was none other than the famous Confederate general, James Longstreet. Longstreet, along with other southern generals of the Civil War, would surrender to Grant, the leader of the Union Army, at Appomattox, VA, in 1865.

No matter who serves as the president of the US, I believe it is our responsibility to pray for him (or one day, her) and support what we can support. I have never seen such hostility as I am witnessing now in Washington D.C. Our two political parties stay at each other's throats non-stop, and there seems to be no sign of the harsh rhetoric ceasing. But as followers of Jesus, our primary loyalty belongs to Him and Him alone. We should be people of conviction and peace, always seeking to speak the truth in love. No matter who lives in the White House, I encourage us all to give honor to whom honor is due, as Paul admonishes us in our Scripture for today's devotional.

I absolutely love our nation and am so grateful to God that I get the privilege of living here. How about you?
