"Because everyone who has been born of God conquers the world.
This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith."
(1 John 5:4, CSB)
God's word is incredible! And all God's people say, "AMEN!" It is amazing that we as followers of Jesus Christ can spend our whole lives looking at, studying, memorizing, and applying God's Word to our life AND we will never get tired of it! What an amazing thought. One thing that I especially love about God's Word is how it speaks to us on different levels at different times. I love how God gives us specific verses for specific moments. I love how the Holy Spirit allows a verse to come to life in our hearts and speak to us profoundly at specific times. That's what happened to me recently with 1 John 5:4.
If you have not had a chance to read this verse, take a moment to read it above, and if you have read it once, please read it again. This verse proclaims the victory that we have over the world, and this victory is founded in our faith in Jesus Christ. This verse fires me up because it declares to me, "My faith in the work of Jesus conquers any and every situation in this life!" That is AWESOME! That gives me hope, joy, power, and confidence to know that because of Jesus' work on the cross and His resurrection from the tomb three days later, I can have victory in this life here on earth!
This victory and confidence reminds me of what my brother used to tell me before every tennis point when I was returning a serve. I was not the best at returning, and every other point I would have to return a serve from the opponent. Before the point would begin, my brother, the much better tennis player, I might add, would say, "I believe in you." For me, this gave me confidence in going up to the return. This gave me confidence in knowing that the better tennis player of the Forshee doubles team believed in me, and his belief in me gave me confidence to excel in returning a tennis serve.
On a much grander scale, this verse should give us confidence, hope, and ultimately, belief in the victory that we have because we are children of God. No matter what you are going through, no matter the situation, we have a victory that has conquered the world: our faith!
Today, when things may be tough, when things may not be going your way, and also on the other hand, when things are going good and you are thriving in this life, always remember the victory that has conquered the world: our faith in Christ Jesus!
