"Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him-a threefold cord is not quickly broken."
(Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, ESV)
We have come to the final day of my devotionals for my friend Danny Forshee. Today, I will write about a book that I wrote with another pastor-friend of mine, Michael Lewis. Michael was the pastor of Great Hills Baptist Church before Danny Forshee. Michael and I became great friends and discipleship partners while he was in Austin. After leaving Great Hills, Michael served a few years as a "Pastor to Pastors" for The North American Mission Board. As we traveled together around the country meeting with pastors, we would tell them about our friendship. Michael is my best friend on the planet: we can share anything with each other. Michael is allowed to ask me any question about my life, and I can ask him any question about his life. In a way, I have become Michael's advocate. We would often have other pastors ask: "How can I get an Andy?" Michael and I decided to write a book in order to help pastors find their own advocate.
I would love to send you a copy of our book Lift Your Pastor – Finding and Becoming a Pastor's Advocate. The book is available for free. You can go to liftyourpastor.com, fill out your contact information, and we will send you a book. If you are a layperson, consider praying about how you could become an advocate for your pastor.
The book explains the ten ways a pastor could use an advocate. Things like praying for them, helping in ministry, encouraging transparency, providing rest, removing aloneness, affirming their calling, and being concerned for their time. We have over six thousand copies in circulation. The book has even been translated into Spanish and German. Our ministry would love to bless your pastor with a copy of this book.
Well, we have come to the end of our week of devotionals. It is my hope and prayer that you have been blessed by these devotionals. I also hope and pray that you now have some tangible ways to encourage and bless your pastor.
Lastly, I hope you would remember that there is always more work to be done to encourage your pastor.
