"...while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ."
(Titus 2:13, CSB)
Kyndall and I have a new Wednesday night tradition. After Wednesday night service, she goes home and puts the boys down, I stay at church and break down, I may or may not get a spicy McChicken from McDonalds on my way home, and when I get home we both sit down to watch... Survivor. Every time I tell someone that I am watching Survivor, I feel like I am back in the early 2000s when the show first started. I used to make fun of my parents for still watching Survivor, but here I am, recording it on YouTubeTV and watching Survivor with Kyndall.
We are at the point in our personal viewing that we are actually waiting on the next episode to come out. We cannot wait for Wednesday nights, and we love watching this show together. It has been interesting to watch the trend of TV shows that are now releasing episodes one at a time weekly. Disney+, Netflix, and Hulu have gone back to the old ways where you used to only watch one episode per week and wait for the next one to come out. In a binge-watching culture, it feels almost odd to wait with expectancy for the show you are watching to release all the episodes!
This waiting and anticipation is what Paul is writing to Titus about in today's focal verse. In verse 12, Paul has told Titus to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way. He then finishes his sentence in verse 13 by talking about waiting for the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior. I think the way Kyndall and I wait for each new Survivor episode is the way we should all be waiting on Jesus to return! Now, obviously, Jesus coming back is way greater than any TV show, movie, etc., so with that being said, let's think about how we wait on new episodes of our favorite show.
Kyndall and I do not sit on our couch and wait for the next episode of Survivor. That would be ridiculous! What do we do? We do what we have been called to do! Kyndall goes and works at Sonshine school, Monday through Friday. I work at the church Sunday through Thursday. We do not sit idly by as we wait for the next episode of Survivor, but we do have great anticipation for it. We have found ourselves talking about different people from the episodes and even talking about who we would vote off the show! What we are doing is waiting in eager expectation for each new episode!
As believers in Christ, we have been given a calling! We have the calling to know Jesus and make Jesus known when and where God has placed us. We know that Jesus is coming back one day, but we do not sit at home and just wait for Him to come back! No, we go and tell people about Jesus, we deny godlessness and worldly lusts, and we live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age. We know that Jesus is coming back, and we look forward to that day in eager expectation, but until then, we live out our calling with the time that we have left on this earth. If we do get to see Jesus come back, then oh, what a great and glorious sight that will be!
