The Spice of the Christian Life
"So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road."
(Matthew 21:6-8)
The key to living the blessed life is obedience. To obey God is a wonderful thing which brings great joy and reward. I like to refer to obedience as the spice of the Christian life.
Matthew 21:6 simply says the disciples "went and did as Jesus commanded them." I love how Matthew records the actions of the two disciples of Jesus who were given a clear mission. Jesus did not suggest they do this; rather, He commanded them to go and find the animals and bring them to Him. Did they know what was about to happen and how the city was going to be blessed through their simple act of obedience? I do not think they had any idea. I think they were going in faith and simply obeying Jesus. Perhaps they reasoned among themselves as they walked to the opposite village: "I'm not sure how this is going to turn out or why Jesus is commanding us to go borrow some animals, but you know what, He has never led us astray before, so let us trust Him this time as well."
And notice what happened next: the people joined in the preparations for Jesus to be received in the city. They placed their clothes on the animals, the crowds put out their clothes along with palm branches and made a pathway for the King to come through Jerusalem. Jesus had no army, no political weight or title, no riches, but the people received Him because He was and is the Son of God.
Obedience is the spice of the Christian life. It is not possible to walk in the joy and peace of God and not do what God tells us to do. We all are going to obey someone or something. We are made to follow, and to obey and follow Jesus is the best life possible. He blesses us, allows us to serve Him, get in on promoting His kingdom, and give Him praise. God did not make us robots; we have a choice. We can go our way or His way. I have done both, and I agree with Christian artist Forrest Frank when he says, "His way is better." I enjoy Forrest's music. Listen to the song "His Way Is Better" here.
Check out the popular dance that goes with the song here.
