"So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him."
(Acts 8:38)
One of the highlights of my recent mission trip to Asia was being able to baptize two new believers from the people group our church adopted. It was a joy to baptize this husband and wife. I was a little concerned over a couple of matters. First, the baptism was to take place in a canal with trash strewn along its banks. It was not the cleanest baptistry, for sure. The other thing that concerned me was how open and public the baptism service would be. This is a country in which Christians are experiencing severe persecution from radical Hindus.
The Lord was kind to us. I stepped into the cold canal with a local pastor, and he and I had the privilege of baptizing this husband and wife. I thought we might go rather quickly, but that was not the case. These brothers and sisters in Christ were in no hurry! They took their time, and they offered multiple prayers to God during the baptism service. They showed no fear or worries over possible retribution. I am in awe of their courage and faithfulness to Jesus.
I have been blessed to baptize people in multiple states in the USA, in the Mediterranean Sea, and in the Jordan River. But this was a first for me to baptize in a dirty canal with the possibility of being persecuted. What a joy and a blessing it is to baptize people in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, just as Jesus commanded us in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).
Have you obeyed the Lord's command to you to openly and publicly follow Him in believer's baptism? We are so blessed in America. We have Bible-teaching churches throughout our nation openly and publicly baptizing new followers of Jesus. We have no concerns that we might be arrested or seriously harassed for practicing our faith. When we baptize people at Connect Church in Liberty Hill, TX, we go to the public swimming pool. It is always a joy to see what happens. Those who are swimming stop, and they watch us and ask what in the world are we doing! What a joy it is to tell them we are followers of Jesus doing what He told us to do.
