The Joy of Gathering, Pt. 1

"Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy."

(1 Timothy 6:17)

Good morning! It is good to be writing to you again! Ashley and I enjoyed our month-long sabbatical. We are grateful to God for the time we got to spend with each other traveling. He is so kind to His people, and as the Word of God says, He gives us all things to enjoy.

We flew to California and spent a week in La Jolla, just outside of San Diego. It is one of our favorite places to visit. It is a beautiful place with gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean. A highlight for me was playing Torrey Pines Golf Course. It was my 60th birthday present, and I had a blast. I actually played well, and that was an added bonus. I have not played much golf over the last several years, so for me to shoot an 81 on this course... well, I will take it every day! Here is a photo of Ashley and me at the course:
Another place we visited was the famous San Diego Zoo:
From California, we flew back to Texas and then drove to Alabama and stayed at my cousin's lake house on Lake Martin. What a blessing it was to gather with some of my family and enjoy a few days together. We enjoyed the fellowship with Scott and Melinda Morton and my oldest brother, Jerry. From Alabama, Ashley and I drove to Florida and enjoyed a cruise and a couple of days at Disney World. I ran a 5K at Castaway Key in the Bahamas and did not hydrate well enough. That started a rough couple of weeks for me. I got Covid for the third time, and it really knocked me down. So, half our 4-week sabbatical was wonderful, and the other half, not so much. But you know what? God is good all the time. Whether I am teeing it up at Torrey Pines or lying on my back with Covid, the goodness of the Lord is constant, and I praise His awesome name.

This week, I am going to write about the importance of gathering, being together with those you love, especially those in your local church. Our nation is pretty politically polarized at the moment, and people are incredibly busy. I encourage us all to slow down the pace of our lives, speak with those we may not see eye to eye with politically, and just enjoy time with those we love. I think this would be a good remedy for much of what ails us as a nation.

Have a blessed Labor Day, and enjoy being with those you love!
