"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
(Philippians 4:13)
In our devotions for today and tomorrow, we will look at some practical ways you and I can work through the various trials and adversities we face. I appreciate Pastor Charles Stanley's insights, and I pray that these nine truths from the life of Paul will bless you and equip you to not merely survive your trial but also to thrive in it.
- Paul learned he could experience contentment in the midst of his adversity. Philippians 4:11 states, "Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have." The context of one of the most recognized and quoted verses in the Bible, Philippians 4:13, is contentment. Paul had learned that, by the power of Jesus, he could do anything, and that included being content no matter what. In 2 Corinthians 12:10, Paul is content even in the midst of all these struggles he faced: "That's why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong." How could he do that? He had a relationship with Jesus who gave him the wonderful grace of contentment. Keep in mind, Paul wrote Philippians and other epistles while in prison!
- Paul could experience God's supernatural strength in the midst of his adversity. Philippians 4:13 does not say he could do a few things through Jesus, but all things through Jesus. Is that not amazing? You know what? You and I, as followers of Jesus, can do the same thing! The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us! (Romans 8:11)
- Paul learned the source for provision for all of his needs. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, Paul writes these memorable words: "And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." God's grace is sufficient. When going through difficulties and feeling like no one can help you, remember that Christ is sufficient. Look to Christ, not yourself or others.
- Paul learned he could trust in the faithfulness of God. In 2 Corinthians 12:10, Paul wrote about how he could even find pleasure in the midst of all his problems and sufferings. How would you like to be able to do that? The key is to trust in God. Exchange your worry and weakness for His unlimited strength.
May the Lord bless you and give you His peace. I pray that whatever it is you are facing, you will find peace and contentment in the middle of the storm. This may be the biggest blessing adversity ever gives you: learning to be content. Many Christians never experience this wonderful blessing from God; He offers it to you. Will you receive it? Remember, Philippians 4:13 is still in the Bible!
