"But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace!"
(Ephesians 2:4-5, CSB)
In light of our week focused on meditating and filling our minds with things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, morally excellent, and praiseworthy, I think this song for today is very fitting. " How Deep The Father's Love For Us" is an oldie but a goodie! This song brings me to Ephesians 2, which so clearly shares the Gospel.
As I reflect on this song, the part that sticks out to me is the line in the first verse: "to make a wretch His treasure". This lyric really challenges me to think about my life before Christ and gives me great insight into who I was before Christ. Without Christ, we are sinners, wretched sinners in need of a savior. We cannot save ourselves, we cannot earn salvation, we cannot do anything to make ourselves God's treasure. But God, who is rich in mercy, made a way for us to go from wretch to His treasure, and that way was Jesus' perfect life, sacrificial death, burial, and resurrection. What song lyrics stick out to you from this great song?
How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory
Behold the man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished
I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
As you meditate on these lyrics and on Scripture today and this weekend, I pray you are blessed and drawn closer to the Lord.
