Meditation, Pt. 3: Tips and Tricks

This week's devotions are written by my son, Bryant Forshee, Lead Student Pastor for Cross Church, Springdale, AR campus.
- Pastor Danny
"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you."

(Isaiah 26:3, ESV)

How has your meditation been going the past couple days? I hope it has been enriching and God-glorifying. I honestly hope it has been fun for you to try something new in your life, sharpen a discipline already a part of your life, or revisit an old discipline that you may not have practiced in a while. For those who have been successful in meditating, I want to encourage you to KEEP IT UP! For those of us who may have had a hard time with it or need a few more tips and tricks for biblical meditation, this devo is for you!

Here are a few tips and tricks for practicing the spiritual discipline of biblical meditation:
  1. Wake up to something to meditate on. What if the first thing you did in the morning was to set your mind on things above, as Colossians 3 talks about? What if the moment you get up, you go over to your Bible or just tap on the Bible app on your phone and start your day off with a Scripture verse that you let linger with you throughout your morning especially. Try it.

  2. Meditate as you drive. I have always heard of praying while you drive, but I was challenged by Robert Morgan's book to meditate as I drive, and let me tell you, it was very challenging at first, but I found it rewarding when I did it. I sometimes have a hard time remembering what I am trying to meditate on, so what I would do is play the verse out loud on my car stereo and then think about the verse I just listened to. Maybe on your next drive, try meditation.

  3. Go for a meditation walk. I don't know where you are reading this devo now, but if it is nice outside and you go for regular walks, what if you took a verse with you on your walk? What if you pondered, practiced, and personalized that verse on your walk? What if you gazed up at the scenery around you and pondered our Creator God of Genesis 1-3? Go for a meditation walk.

  4. Set a reminder to meditate. A beautiful thing about phones nowadays is that they can remind you to do things. If you struggle to remember to meditate throughout your day, have your phone remind you to meditate at a certain part of the day.

  5. Set a calendar invite to meditate. If you're really wanting to meditate throughout your day, what if you put on your calendar a certain amount of time to meditate on scriptures that you read that morning or scriptures that mean a lot to you.

  6. Use widgets. On certain devices, you can set a widget of an app you often use. For me, I have a widget on my home screen that takes me to the note on my phone that has my meditation verses in it. When I open my phone and see that widget, I tap on it and read the verses or only read one verse that I am trying to meditate on that day. It's a great way to incorporate meditation through something that we all look at throughout the day: our phones.

  7. Change your home screen. What if you took the verse that you were trying to meditate on for the day and made it your home screen? That way whenever you look at your phone, you see your verse that you are wanting to meditate on.

  8. Meditate in the shower. Robert Morgan encourages us with this tip, "Tomorrow take a Bible verse into the shower along with your soap and washcloth. Rinse off your mind. Train yourself to ponder a truth of Scripture while you go about your scrubbing and shampooing."
I hope you will use one or more of these tips throughout your biblical meditation journey! Let us know if you have any others that work for you!
