Remembering God's Promises

Remembering God's Promises

I hope you don't feel whiplash, but we're looking back again today: now at the entirety of Scripture to remember the many promises of God.

Remembering God's Promises

This week's devotions are written by my friend Jessica Hermann, former director of our college ministry at Great Hills Baptist Church.

I hope you don't feel any whiplash here, going between looking back and looking forward, but we're going to look back again today. This time, however, we're not looking back at 2023; we're looking back at the entirety of Scripture to identify and remember the many promises of God. As I read Scripture, I highlight all the promises that I see in a particular color. These promises are invaluable truths to bring to mind when you need encouragement, truth, and hope. Here is a short list of a few of God's promises in Scripture that have encouraged me in various situations. Read through them and identify what the promise is in each passage.

Isaiah 40:31: "But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

Jeremiah 29:11: "'For I know the plans I have for you', declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"

Matthew 6:31-33: "So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Psalm 34:10: "The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing."

James 4:7: "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

Matthew 11:28-30: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

John 15:5: "Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing."

James 1:5: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."

Psalm 37:4: "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."

Jeremiah 29:12: "Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you."

There are so many more. Hundreds more. Take a moment today to write these amazing promises on your hearts again. Remind yourself of His past faithfulness to keep all of His promises, and may that encourage you to know that He will always keep them again and again.

Are there any promises of God that particularly bring you joy, hope and comfort? Write it on a piece of paper and place it somewhere where you will see it daily.

Lord, thank you for your many promises you have given us in your word. Please help us to remember and recall them in moments of difficulty and doubt. You are faithful, and You are more than enough for us. In Jesus name, amen.
