"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight."
(Proverbs 3:5-6, NLT)
A couple weekends ago, my wife Kyndall and I were driving home after an AWESOME worship service! We sang some incredible songs, we heard a powerful message from Psalm 103, we went and served at our Student Ministry small groups, and then were headed home for the amazing Sunday nap that the Forshees are very big fans of! On the way home, we were talking about the day, and Kyndall began recalling a specific worship song that we had sung.
This song was "Trust in God" by Elevation Worship, feat. Chris Brown & Isaiah Templeton. It is an anthemic song about trusting in God and how God delivers. The bridge goes like this:
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
That's why I trust Him, that's why I trust Him
We then began having a dialogue on how sometimes those words are extremely hard to sing, especially with what we are going through right now. If you are unfamiliar with our story, we are in the process of adoption and have been since June 2022. We have had some ups and downs and everything in between. We have prayed and prayed for a child, but we are childless at this moment.
So what do you do? What do you do when you are presented with a hard situation, and you're singing lyrics like the ones above, but they don't really match your circumstances?
What do you do when you can't see the big picture?
What do you do when you are in the middle of hard times?
That is where our verse of the day comes into play! This is a very familiar verse to some, but sometimes the simplest truths are the ones we need in the hardest times. Kyndall and I know that God is faithful. We know that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We know Jeremiah 29:11 to be true of our lives, but what do we do in the childless stage of our lives, seeking adoption? We trust.
We trust in the Lord with all of our hearts, and we don't lean on our own understanding. Here is my encouragement for you today, without knowing what your circumstances are: Trust in God. If your circumstances are hard, pray Proverbs 3:5-6 over yourself and your situation. Pray that God would give you the faith to believe Proverbs 3:5-6 is true for you this very day. If your circumstances are good, still pray Proverbs 3:5-6 over your life, that you would trust God just as much in the good times as you do the tough times.
The beauty of hard times, good times, in-between times, and (as hard as it is to type this personally) even the childless times is that God can still be trusted. Let Proverbs 3:5-6 be an anthem for you today, and even join along in the worship song declaring that you trust in God.
