As our biblical text for today states, God restores our souls, and He leads us in the right paths. Why does He do this for His children? He does these things and a million others because He delights in us!
The context of Psalm 52 is that David is struggling and on the run from King Saul. Before God made David the great earthy king who ruled Israel, He first had to break and mold him into the man of God He wanted him to be. Psalm 52:1 states: "Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures continually." Verse 9 says:
"I will praise You forever,
Because You have done it;
And in the presence of Your saints
I will wait on Your name, for it is good."
Our circumstances may be like David's. We may find ourselves in a tight place, a season full of heartaches and trials. Our circumstances may not be good; in fact, they might be disastrous, but we can still affirm the goodness of God. One of the first things the Devil will do to you when you are walking through the valley is to tempt you to question the goodness of God. Is God fair? Why is He allowing this? Why will He not answer you? There are a thousand other similar questions the Devil will place in your mind to tempt you to be upset with God and try to get you to lose your excitement for serving God and sharing Him with others.
Toby Mac and Blessing Offor sing about the goodness of God in their song, "The Goodness". Here are some of the lyrics:
You made the rain, so when it falls on me
Should I complain, or feel You calling me
It's all on me to stay
And really catch what You're showing
It's my roots that You're growing
'Cause life is more than this moment
You are the light, so when the darkness falls
The greatest heights, they never seem so tall no not at all
You're right, it's my roots that You're growing,
Don't wanna miss what You're showing
Ain't no doubt about You
Everywhere that I go
You keep showing up (Lord You)
Make me wanna shout it
You're the goodness in my life
It is interesting to note that this was the first album Toby Mac recorded after the death of his 21 year-old son, Truett, who died by an accidental overdose of drugs. So tragic. Blessing Offor reminds me of Stevie Wonder; he is a gifted African-American artist who is blind and extremely talented. Both Toby Mac and Blessing Offor know what it is like to walk in a deep valley and choose to focus on and even sing about the goodness of God.
Take a couple of minutes and listen to this powerful duet on the goodness of God:
