"For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ."
(2 Corinthians 10:3-5)
"Bringing into captivity" is the Greek word aichmalotizo, which means to capture and bring under control. Every thought. Think about that: every thought! Satan specializes in accusation, temptation, deception, harsh words, or whatever he can use to attack us in the spiritual realm. These assaults from the enemy of our souls affect our minds. If he wins this battle of the mind or we allow him a seat at the table, then it is only a matter of time until it is reflected in our words and actions. But let us, the people of God, stop and take captive, bring under control, every thought. We make it obedient to Christ. We make it obey, submit to Christ.
We can either give the enemy a seat at the table of our hearts and minds or we can resist and refuse him a place. If he is granted access to the table of your mind, it will end in destruction, pain, and hurt. Refusing him in the name of Jesus and the power of Jesus will lead to life and peace.
How can you apply these truths to your life?
We are well-equipped as followers of Jesus to win these battles in our minds. Yes, we are in the flesh as living human beings walking on this earth, but we have to engage in spiritual battles in our minds. The Devil is relentless and will not leave you alone. Before salvation, you were living a life that gratified the lusts of the flesh and were not a foe of darkness but in cooperation with darkness. But ever since you gave your life to Jesus, you have had the Holy Spirit within you and the evil one in full battle array against you. His mission is to attack us and tempt us to sin. Why? He wants to bring harm to Christ and His Church.
But keep in mind this awesome word from 1 John 4:4: "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
Also, check out these promises from 2 Peter 1:2-4: "Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."
If you know the Lord, you have the Spirit of Jesus living in you, and you have the weapon of the Word of God! You are more than equipped to do spiritual battle against the enemy of your soul. You are destined for victory every single time if you surrender to Christ and follow His plan as revealed in His Word.
