A Model for Disciple-Making

A Model for Disciple-Making

Who are you discipling? Anyone? Disciple-making is the Great
Commission. If you know and love Jesus, then you are qualified.

A Model for Disciple-Making

"And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also."

(2 Timothy 2:2)

If you are familiar with professional golf, then you recognize the name Webb Simpson. Webb has won multiple times on the PGA Tour, including the 2012 U.S. Open and the 2018 Players Championship. Webb has had a stellar career in golf and continues to play extremely well. However, more than being a great golfer, he is a devout follower of Jesus Christ. He loves the Lord, and his actions demonstrate this about him. His good friend, Dave Owen, is also a good friend of mine who has appeared on our podcast.
Dave played golf and basketball in college, and he currently serves as the senior associate pastor of Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC. Dave and I met while he was a student and I was teaching at Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. Dave loves Jesus and is such an encourager. He will be preaching at our home church, Great Hills Baptist Church in Austin, TX, on March 20.

Dave discipled Webb Simpson, and he also performed the pre-marital counseling and wedding for Webb's caddie, Paul Tesori, who is also a dedicated follower of Jesus. Dave Owen loves Jesus and making disciples. He is constantly pouring into other men helping them become fully devoted followers of Christ.

What Dave Owen did for Webb Simpson is precisely what Jesus did for the 12 Apostles and what Paul did for Timothy, Aquila, Priscilla, and many others. It is the secret sauce of church health and life! It is not easy, but it is well worth every minute we put into it. In America, we judge pastors and churches by what? Almost always, the primary indicator of whether a church is healthy or not is the size of the church. If there are many people on Sunday at a given location, then that church must be a success, right? That is not necessarily true. God judges our churches according to how well we are making disciples, not gathering a crowd. God is more interested in our sending capacity than He is in our seating capacity.

Who are you discipling? Men, what other men are you helping grow in their relationship with Jesus so that they are mature in the faith? Ladies, what other women are you pouring into so that they can go and disciple other ladies? Disciple-making is the Great Commission. It is the most important thing we do and why Jesus has left us on this earth. And what is amazing is how uncomplicated it is. If you know Jesus and have a healthy relationship with Him, then you are qualified to lead others to know the Lord and to grow in Him. What's important is not so much your ability as it is your availability to God. If you pray and ask the Lord to show you, then He will show you the people He wants you to disciple.
