Jesus Knew Scripture

Jesus Knew Scripture

When was the last time you saw a passage of scripture and loved it so much
that you wanted to memorize it? Jesus hid scripture in His heart. Do you?

Jesus Knew Scripture

This week's devotions are written by my son, Bryant Forshee, Junior High Pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church.
- Pastor Danny
"He answered, 'It is written: Man must not live on bread alone
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

(Matthew 4:4, CSB)

The passage above is Jesus' response to Satan's first temptation. Yesterday we looked at Jesus and how He prayed. Today, I want to look at how Jesus KNEW scripture. If you keep reading the account of Jesus' temptation in Matthew 4, you will see that Jesus responds to the temptations of Satan with, "it is written." Jesus knew scripture, and that was what He used when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness.

But that is not the only time that Jesus quoted scripture. Below is a screenshot of a document called "Old Testament Passages Quoted by Jesus Christ" that was put out by Liberty University, and it is fascinating:
The document also goes on to talk about other references to the Old Testament that Jesus made. It is a FASCINATING document. What sticks out to me is that for Jesus to have quoted all of these scriptures, that means He would have had to study and know these passages.

Jesus was a person who hid scripture in His heart. Are you?

When was the last time you saw a passage of scripture and loved it so much that you wanted to memorize it? In an age of immediate answers and immediate knowledge, it is easy to be able to look up passages that we may have forgotten or look up a passage to send to someone, but when was the last time you memorized scripture?

Jesus quoted scripture. He quoted A LOT of scripture. If Jesus is our ultimate example, we need to be memorizing and meditating on the truth of God's word.

This is NOT an easy task. Memorizing is more challenging for some than others. I personally struggle with this discipline, so I asked a brother in Christ to hold me accountable for scripture memory. If you struggle with memorizing, ask a friend who is a follower of Jesus to hold you accountable to memorize scripture.

Jesus memorized Scripture. We need to memorize Scripture.
