"And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ."
(Ephesians 4:11-12)
Last night was a wonderful evening as we ordained our youngest son, Leighton Forshee, to the Gospel Ministry. It is always a blessing to ordain those that God has called out to serve the church of Jesus Christ in a special way. All followers of Jesus are called to serve Him, which we should all understand, but some are tasked by God to serve vocationally, and that is something we should all celebrate.
The way we ordain here at our church, Great Hills Baptist Church, is we have an ordination council that meets with the ministry candidate. We ask him to share his testimony, his call to ministry, and any doctrinal questions he may have, and we ask our own doctrinal questions of him as well. The candidate is usually nervous but soon settles in and does a great job.
Leighton chose his favorite songs to be sung at the beginning of the service, I preached his charge (ordination message), and we had a time of prayer with the laying on of hands at the end. That is always a very powerful time for the person being ordained and for the entire church. I am so proud of Leighton and his wife, Danielle, and I know that God is going to continue to use them greatly in serving Christ, ministering to many, and expanding the Kingdom of God.
Our church is committed to calling out the called of God. We want to do all we can to nurture that call in someone's life and affirm each man or woman that God is calling to serve Him in vocational ministry. There are so many different types of ministries in which God uses people. Paul mentions some of these in our text today. Whatever the call might entail, the purposes stay the same and that is to equip the saints for ministry and edify or build up the church.
I know God is calling many to serve Him in this capacity. Are you one of them? If God selects you to do this, please look at it for what it is: a true blessing and honor. Please do not pull a Jonah and run away! Lean into the calling with faith and surrender. God will work out the details. Be open, willing, and obedient.
