Rolling Up His Sleeves

Rolling Up His Sleeves

Some of you need God to intervene in your life in a powerful way. He is still
the same God who rolled up His sleeves to create the world, and He can.

Rolling Up His Sleeves

"Sing to God a brand-new song.
He's made a world of wonders!
He rolled up his sleeves,
He set things right."

(Psalm 98:1)

Sunday, June 20, is Father's Day. It is one of my favorite days of the year. God has blessed me with three great kids who all married wonderful people. I also am blessed to have two grandkids that I absolutely love. God has been so good to me, and my greatest joys in life after my relationship with Jesus and my wife, Ashley, are with those who call me Dad and Pops.

In a recent article in Decision magazine, popular Christian artist, Toby Mac opened up about the tragedy he experienced almost two years ago when his son accidentally overdosed on fentanyl. Truett was only 21 years old and had a very promising career ahead of him as a music artist. I know parents who have had their children precede them in death, and it is the most painful experience imaginable. My New Testament professor in seminary had our class on the edge of our seats and then in tears as he shared about the tragic and untimely death of his 37 year-old son, a gifted musician who died in his sleep. There was no explanation. He simply slipped into eternity. Dr. Virteous Gideon told our class that he and his wife made it through this tough time by tying a knot at the end of the rope of faith and hanging on.

Toby Mac said that after his son's death, he did not think he would be able to write another upbeat song ever again. But while reading Psalm 98 in the Message (a translation by Eugene Peterson), that all changed. The verse that stirred Toby Mac's soul was this one: "Sing to God a brand new song. He's made a world of wonders! He rolled up His sleeves. He set things right." Toby Mac states, "I read that God is rolling up His sleeves, and I just thought what a promise that is, what comfort to think that the God of all creation is literally rolling up His sleeves on our behalf, and then I thought—On my behalf." At this time, the seven-time Grammy award winning artist began writing his hit song, "Help Is on the Way (Maybe Midnight)". (Source.)

Some of you reading today's devotion need God to intervene in your life in a powerful way. He is still the same God who rolled up His sleeves to create the world and the same God who has brought many, including Toby Mac and his wife, Amanda, through the fiercest of storms. He can do the same for you and for me. Will you trust Him now? Call upon the Lord and ask Him to intervene in your time of desperation. Trust Him. He will come through. As Toby Mac puts it, "It may be midnight or midday. It's never early, never late. He gon' stand by what He claim. I've lived enough life to say, help is on the way."
