"O God, do not be far from me;
O my God, make haste to help me!"
(Psalm 71:12)
Depending on which Bible translation you use, there are at least 200 usages of the word "help" in the Word of God. One of those is in our passage for today. If you are feeling a little low today and need a quick pick up, I offer this Psalm to you. It may have been written by David, but no author is mentioned. But what is presented is a man who is aging and still believes in God and needs the LORD to come to his aid and assist him.
The Psalmist asks God to make haste or hurry and help him. God is amazing. He is never early or late; rather, His timing is perfect. I am learning this truth in my own life. There are times that God delays His coming to our aid. Why is that? I think one of the reasons is He wants us to trust Him. He also is doing a work in us that takes time and some pruning to bring about. For King and Country have a little line in their song Amen that goes like this: "Caterpillar to a butterfly." The process of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly is called metamorphosis and takes place inside a chrysalis (a protective shell). If the process is rushed, then the butterfly will die. It is only in this difficult process that beauty comes to life.
Sounds like life for us, doesn't it? I am currently in contact with and praying for many people who are battling the dreaded disease of cancer. Some are in a fierce battle for their lives. I would love for God to touch each one and heal them immediately, but most likely, that will not be the case, though I pray for it. Of course, there is an element of mystery, but the bottom line is, God knows what He is doing, and we must trust Him. He will come through, but in His own time and in His own way.
I enjoy Toby Mac and his music. This guy keeps creating hit songs even in his fifties, and I'm talking upbeat, creative songs that appeal to young and old alike. Some of my favorite lines in his newest hit song, Help Is on the Way, are:
It may be midnight or midday
It's never early, never late
He gon' stand by what He claim
I've lived enough life to say
Help is on the way (roundin' the corner)
Help is on the way (comin' for ya)
Help is on the way (yeah, yeah)
I've lived enough life to say
Help is on the way
Sometimes it's days
Sometimes it's years
Some face a lifetime of falling tears
But He's in the darkness, He's in the cold
Just like the morning, He always shows
Well I've seen my share of troubles
But the Lord ain't failed me yet
So I'm holding on to the promise y'all
That He's rolling up His sleeves again
Take a moment and crank up the volume and be blessed by this song with a great message and upbeat rhythm:
