My Anchor

My Anchor

What do you do when the heavy rains of life drop violently upon you?
There is only one sure and steady anchor for the soul, and that is Jesus Christ.

My Anchor

"This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek."

(Hebrews 6:19-20)

Last week was one of the busiest weeks of my life. I spoke six times, and some nights I was up late preparing for what I would say the next day. On Wednesday, I was struggling. I was running out of steam, and thankfully my wife, Ashley, prayed for me and encouraged me, and onward I went. I recall telling her last week that I could distinctly feel the power of people praying for me. Have you ever felt that? It is truly an amazing thing to experience.

When I need a spiritual lift, I usually do two things: I ask people to pray for me, and I listen to Christian music. There were two songs in particular on this day that lifted me and refreshed my soul. The first one was by the Christian band, Skillet, and the title of the song is "Anchor". Here are some of the lyrics:

Drifting beneath the horizon
Body is weak but I'm trying
To make it to shore, but I'm falling short
I need You more
Wave after wave, I've been sinking
So unto Your promise I'm clinging
You say that I'm strong, to You I belong
Keep holding on

You are my anchor
So steady me, steady me now
You are my anchor
You're keeping my feet on the ground
In angry oceans, You've never broken through
Every wave of the storm
You are my anchor
So steady me, steady me now
Come steady me, steady me now

Here is the song performed by Skillet:
Skillet - "Anchor" (Lyric Video)
What do you do when the heavy rains of life drop violently upon you? Many people turn to substances or to other people who prove to be weak and light anchors, unable to stabilize and secure. There is one sure and steady anchor for the soul, and that is Jesus Christ. Our text from Hebrews tells us that Jesus is our sure and steadfast anchor. This anchor is not made of concrete or steel, but it is a living Person: Jesus.

I continue to be saddened by the turmoil caused by the COVID-19 virus that is currently plaguing our world. Many in our country have contracted the virus, and many have died. I saw where the line to get free food in Los Angeles had stretched for over a mile. Many people are out of work, and without resources to fall back on, many of those folks are in a place of desperation. My heart breaks for them. I also read that a 66 year-old lady sick with COVID-19 in a nursing home in Michigan called out to Alexa (an artificial intelligence device made by Amazon) for help in her desperation. She made 40 requests to this device in the last few days leading up to her death from the virus. So incredibly sad!

There is so much hurt and suffering in our world. Will you join me in praying for those who are suffering and helping them in any way you can? There are so many wonderful ministries helping those suffering from this coronavirus. One ministry that we recommend and have supported directly is Samaritan's Purse, led by Franklin Graham.

May the Lord bless and strengthen you today. Lean on Him as the anchor for your soul. As you are sustained and strengthened by Christ, go and serve others in His name, and help them with the power God has granted to you.
