"There is no one like the God of Jeshurun,
Who rides the heavens to help you,
And in His excellency on the clouds.
The eternal God is your refuge,
And underneath are the everlasting arms;
He will thrust out the enemy from before you,
And will say, 'Destroy!'"
(Deuteronomy 33:26-27)
I love our church staff at Great Hills Baptist Church. We have such dedicated and godly men and women providing excellent leadership for our people. We have walked through some very hard times, especially when we were strapped with a multi-million-dollar debt. But God has been so very good to us. By His grace and power, we have eliminated the debt and are healthier than at any other time since I began serving the church 10.5 years ago. One day last week, as I was reading the Bible in my quiet time with the Lord, I came across our verses for today's devotion. I know I have read this passage before, but never had it jumped out at me like it did on this day. I was so blessed by it that I copied it and sent it to our staff in a text message. They too were blessed by Moses' declaration of blessing on the children of Israel.
The God of Jeshurun is none other than Yahweh, the LORD God of Israel. One biblical scholar states, "Jeshurun is a poetic reference to the nation of Israel. It is a term of endearment; the Greek Septuagint translates Jeshurun as 'beloved one,' using a form of the word agape. The name Jeshurun is used four times in the books of Deuteronomy and Isaiah. In each case the name occurs in a poetic setting and refers to Israel, God's beloved people. . . . Jeshurun is God's grace on display."
God loves His people. When you and I come to Him in repentance and faith and ask for His salvation, He saves us, and we become His children. There is no one like our God. He will move heaven and earth to come to your aid. I love the part of this verse where it says, "Who rides the heavens to help you." Nahum 1:3 tells us that the clouds are the dust of His feet!
God is not against you. He is very much for you. He is our refuge, the One we run to in times of trouble. Underneath us, Moses goes on to say, are the everlasting arms of God. This phrase reminds me of the following lyrics to an old hymn, "What have I to dread, what have I to fear, leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, leaning on the everlasting arms."
When God is on your side, you need not worry or fear. He protects and sustains you, and He even gives you victory over your enemies. With such a wonderful and loving God with us and protecting us, we should live in constant peace and joy.
Hear it again: GOD IS FOR YOU!
